It may be just me, but I find most spaces decorated for Christmas to appear very traditional.  Not necessarily because the furnishings are more traditional in style; perhaps it is the trees and ornaments and selected colour schemes. For those of you in agreement who are looking for something with a more contemporary feel, one or more of the following may provide the inspiration you need to create something fresh and exciting this year!

A tall, skinny tree covered with “snow” — actually a white feather boa — and shimmering ornaments in pale blue, silver, and white feels light within this space; a perfect complement to the existing winter white palette.

A white tree is certainly not for everyone, but a simple, fresh colour scheme taken from the room’s regular décor features gives a more casual, yet still festive, atmosphere.

Modern doesn’t need to be monochromatic or lacking in colour.  This tree is almost overflowing with boldly coloured ornaments. What I really like is the simple treatment of the framed art and the simple floral arrangement on the shelf to tie it all together.

An utterly vibrant space, this dining room has nary a tree nor a garland in sight, but it is definitely festive with the simple addition of ornaments hanging from the chandelier and lying randomly on the table.

This wine bottle idea can easily be incorporated into any space.  It creates great ambient lighting and could be scattered throughout a room, lined up on a console or table, or even act as a temporary fireplace insert.

Whoever said a tree had to be, or even resemble, an evergreen?  This fresh take uses random branches.  Outside on a tree, they might look barren and cold.  But within this setting, it looks great!

Another example of a more spartan “tree” with select ornaments.

Black and white Christmas

For some reason, this space screams Dr. Seuss to me.  And I love it!!  Sheer whimsy and playfulness.
